Household Hazardous Waste

Household batteries, fluorescent tubes, pool chemicals, paints, insecticides, and other items can be properly disposed of by appointment. Call the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program at (408) 299-7300 to make a drop-off appointment and for more information.

Household Batteries:
Household batteries contain hazardous materials that can leak and pollute our groundwater when disposed of in a landfill. Residents can recycle used household batteries in special bags provided by Foothill Disposal.

All alkaline and rechargeable batteries are accepted.

Place used household batteries in the bag and place on top of the recycling cart on collection day.

Please do not put batteries in the garbage. Use an inexpensive battery tester to make sure the battery has been used before recycling it. Testers can be purchased at most drug, hardware, and electronic stores.

Residents can drop off rechargeable and alkaline household batteries at Foothill Disposal's Recycling Center at 935 Terra Bella Avenue, in Mountain View or the SMaRT Station in Sunnyvale.

Vehicle Batteries:
The SMaRT Station accepts vehicle batteries or you can call Household Hazardous Waste at (408) 299-7300 to set up an appointment. The SMaRT Station is located at 301 Carl Road, Sunnyvale - (408) 752-8530. Hours are 8 am to 5 pm daily.

Motor Oil (residential):
Used motor oil and used oil filters can be placed in approved containers provided by Foothill Disposal and placed on the curb on recycling day.

Old Television And Computer Monitors:
These items contain lead and other hazardous waste. You can drop them off at the SMaRT Station located at 301 Carl Road (north east end of Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale (408) 752-8530. To schedule a special curbside collection, call Foothill Disposal at (650) 967-3034 or e-mail customer service. Fees apply. Some manufacturers offer "take-back" programs for a small fee.
